The 74% Percent Who Don’t Believe Social Media Matters.

I just read the results of a poll that asked people if they believe social media affects their buying decisions.   According to the results 74% of those polled feel that social media does not affect their  decisions to about what they buy.   I strongly suspect that of this 74%, the majority simply do not realize how much social media is beginning to shape their buying decisions.

Social Media Services - Orange County - Social CindyThe statistic of those who are affected, but don’t realize it, would certainly be much harder to measure.  I certainly can’t prove it either.  I base my assertion on  observations of the discussions on facebook, and twitter.  I  factor in the belief that 80 to 90% of shoppers today begin their buying decision for anything by jumping on a search engine and researching their purchase on-line.  I also fold in the fact that social media is having an ever larger impact on the search results delivered by the most popular search engines.

When you factor it all in,  it is hard for me to believe that 74% of shoppers are actually unaffected by what is happening on social media.  What is much easier to believe is that many people will fail to recognize or choose not  to admit that they are affected.  I understand this completely.  I for one, would never admit that I was ever swayed by TV commercials.

Many of the business owners I speak with are beginning to recognize that a consistent and persistent social media presence is necessary.  The challenge for many is how to get it done when they are already fully busy.  If you know that you need a solid social media presence but can’t find the time, you might check with my friends at Social-Cindy.comSocial-Cindy.com will work with your budget to design and maintain a best “bang for the buck” campaign for your business.

Social Media Marketing is Here

We speak to many small business owners each week about social media marketing.

It’s funny;  They will admit that social media has the power to bring down oppressive regimes in third world countries, and they realize social media had the power to make Justin Bieber a big star, but they still aren’t quite sure social media has the power to make their small business more successful.

Fact is that some small business owners have taken the plunge, and the rest will have to follow in order to keep up. If you don’t believe me watch this…

Now consider that this video is over a year old!

YouTube Stars: Not Waiting for American Idol

Emerging artists are not sitting around waiting to be discovered by American Idol, or record company A&R men.  They are promoting themselves to stardom on YouTube and other social media platforms.  They are bypassing the gatekeepers of the music industry and capitalizing on the ability presented by the Internet, to put themselves in front of you and me.  Check out Christina Grimmie and Sam Tsui.

I for one think this is a great new trend. I wish them the best of luck.

2011 – The Year Social Media Becomes Essential for Small Business.

The Web Handyman belongs to a networking group that consist of about 50 business owners of all different types.   The membership includes doctors, lawyers, tradesman, and other business owners.  All of our members are at the top of their respective fields.  I believe in terms of marketing savvy, they are fairly representative of small business owners all across the country.

I have been polling them about their attitudes about using social media as a serious part of their marketing plan. I guess I would categorize them as being in the “curious” stage at this point. They are certainly aware of Social Media. They are hearing stories, and talking about it,  but few  have truly incorporated social media into their daily marketing plan.

It is my firm belief  that this will be the year that changes.  By the end of 2011 I believe small business owners will not only embrace social media, but they will consider it essential to the health of their business. Don’t take my word for it. Check out this video to get a sense of the trajectory of  social media in business.

OK, so you certainly don’t have to add social media marketing to your business plan, but know that many of your competitors will, and very soon.

If you are at that curious stage and wish to find out more about the social media wave that is about to break over us, I suggest you contact my friend Phil Lauterjung, and sign up for his excellent  social media course through the fine folks at Duct Tape Marketing.  I have taken several introductory courses on the subject and his is by far the most thorough and useful when it comes to actually making it work for your business.

Phil can be reached at Integrated LeadGen Results,  (949) 582 9310.

Please tell him the Web Handyman sent you.
